When it comes to family-friendly compact SUVs, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue are big contenders in the market. Both crossovers are excellent choices, each with their own features and driving experience. If you're looking for a vehicle that's dependable, comfortable, and full of exciting tech features to keep the kids engaged, we'd put our money on the RAV4 any day of the week! Sure, here at Vernon Toyota, we may be a little biased. But truthfully speaking, the facts don't lie. With impressive fuel efficiency, a suite of standard connectivity specs, advanced safety features, and numerous trim levels to choose from, the RAV4 does a lot to show up the Rogue. Read on to learn more about what makes the RAV4 come out on top!

“The fifth-generation RAV4 represents a massive improvement over its predecessor. Toyota's best-selling little ute finished fourth in an eight-vehicle compact SUV comparison in 2019, held back by an unimpressive (and loud) powertrain, packaging faults such as rear seats that don't fold flat, and rear doors that fail to open as far as we'd like. But all of that has changed! We appreciate the RAV4's adventurous interior and exterior design. The cabin is full of contrasting accents and chunky control knobs that differentiate the RAV4 from its competition. Rear seat room is generous, despite measurements that suggest otherwise.”

Fuel-Efficient and Adventure-Ready

The RAV4 offers excellent fuel economy in both the gas and hybrid model. The gas model drips a mere 8.8 /6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (city/highway), while the Rogue can only manage 8.9 L/100 km in the city and 7.0 on the highway. In the RAV4 Hybrid with its standard Electronic On-Demand AWD, the fuel efficiency is almost unheard of for an SUV at just 5.8/6.3 L/100 km (city/highway). The Rogue, unfortunately, still doesn't offer a hybrid engine.

If you’re looking for a powerful adventure with the family, the RAV4 won't disappoint in that arena either. Under the hood of the RAV4 is a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that makes 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Rogue only runs 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque.

Safety is Standard with Toyota

Safety is key when it comes to Toyota, and the RAV4 is no exception. Every 2021 RAV4 comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes a suite of advanced active safety features like:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Road Sign Assist

“The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the RAV4 a five-star rating, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named it a Top Safety Pick+.”

While the Rogue has many comparable safety features, several are not available on the base model. In addition, the Rogue fails to offer advanced active safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection or Road Sign Assist.

Your Home Away from Home

If you're planning on embarking on a weekend getaway with the family, you'll love how comfortable the RAV4 will make the journey! While both crossover SUVs have a suite of infotainment specs, the RAV4 has more media features that come standard than the Nissan Rogue, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa connectivity. You can also stream your favourite music via Bluetooth wireless technology, plus enjoy SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a 3-month subscription. Rogue offers some of the same; however, wireless Apple CarPlay integration only comes standard on the pricey Rogue Platinum, while Amazon Alexa connectivity fails to make an appearance on any trim level.

Entune App Suite

“From spartan to swanky to outdoorsy, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 offers something for almost everyone, which earned it an Editors' Choice award. The base LE covers the economical end of the spectrum while the well-equipped Limited and TRD Off-Road models offer impressive amounts of equipment aimed at two very different types of buyers.”

With up to 9 outstanding trim levels to choose from, the possibilities and upgrades are endless. RAV4 trims include the front-wheel-drive LE and the same version with all-wheel traction. You’ll then find the XLE, which also offers both drive configurations and can be equipped with a Premium package that adds leather seating, an upgraded infotainment system, and larger wheels when you go for AWD. The Trail model can be upgraded with the flashy and functional TRD Off-Road package if you don’t decide to go for the fully loaded Limited trim. The LE, XLE, and Limited all come hybrid. The Rogue basically only offers two different trims that are each available in all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. Again, still no hybrids!
